Not listening

My 2 year old doesn't want to listen to me when we are in the shop and keeps walking away from me.What can I do?

Thanks for your question, it is common for shopping centres to be a place where parents of young children experience the behviour you describe. Shopping centres are highly stimulating places in their colours, the people, busy and background noise and the way shops are designed to draw children in toward products. Children are often over stimulated in these places, leading to challenges in keeping their attention on task, rather than the shelves.

Planning the list of groceries at home with your child, then taking this list to the shop may give children greater focus. By ensuring eye contact and the list to look at, reading each item with your child, and giving them a task - can you get three apples? or we need one of those cans of corn... - their attention to you may increase. This also means they have a chance to move to and from the trolley, exploring while still contributing to this essential task for the family.
