banging head

Postby jeanie » Sat 16 Jul, 2011 7:45 pm

My boy is now 18 months and sometimes bangs his head on the floor - it seems to be more when he is tired or frustrated?

Thanks for your post. Head banging and body-rocking can be quite common at this stage of development. Some toddlers will bang their head when they are tired, frustrated or cross and others will find the action quite comforting if they are trying to calm themselves. You seem to have noticed when your little boy is more likely to bang his head on the floor and this would certainly fit in with the most common reasons for head banging. There is some really good information on head banging on (under habits) and also on (under head banging). You may find this useful. Most of the information in this area normalizes this behaviour but of course, if you are at all worried or concerned about your little boy, it is always worth talking this through with your Child Health Nurse or Doctor. Looking at strategies to try and distract your little one, or minimize his frustration may also help but often little ones will stop this behaviour as they get older.
Hope this information is useful.
