Poos in 6 week old

Postby NeedSomeHelp » Sun 23 Jan, 2011 9:41 pm

I am a bit worried about my six week old baby's poos. Until this week she was pooing all the time but now she is only pooing every 5 days or so. Everything else seems normal and her poos are still really sloppy, she doesnt seem sick but is this a worry? She is breastfed. Thanks.

Hi NeedSomeHelp,
Thanks for your post. As your baby grows the poos may change from several poos a day, to sometimes no poos for as long as 10 days. If your baby is exclusively breast fed, and is gaining weight, having around 6 wet nappies a day, and generally contented there is no cause for concern. Because breast milk is so easily absorbed, at times of rapid growth, it takes longer for the milk byproducts to build up in the bowel, so this is perhaps why baby isn't pooing daily. This is temporary and bowels will return to a more frequent pattern as baby grows. If you have any ongoing concerns regarding this, have a chat with your Child Health Nurse, or G.P.
